Overbeck’s Remembers – Exhibition
1 April 2014 - 2 November 2014
Our WWl exhibition opened in April remembering the Vereker family whose 21-year-old son Robert was killed just three weeks after Britain declared war in August 1914.
To come to terms with this tragedy, his parents opened their newly built house as a VAD hospital for the convalescence of over a thousand Tommies.
The exhibition shows how during the three and a half years that the hospital was open, every effort was made to make life more enjoyable for the men. After their few weeks of recovery in what they referred to as a paradise, many then had to return to the horrors of the front.
The National Trust museum and sub-tropical garden at Overbeck’s near Salcombe is open every day from 11am to 5pm until Sunday 2nd November.
Normal charges apply.
