First World War Centenary Commemoration Concert

Supporting the Royal British Legion Poppy Appeal, on Saturday 26th July at 8.15pm St Peter’s Church, Ilfracombe
The concert will feature the following :
Mozart – Ave verum corpus (K618) Austrian composer. Motet composed in Baden, a small spa town near Vienna.
Vaughan Williams – Serenade to Music As a private in the Royal Army Medical Corps, the composer served as a stretcher bearer in France and on the Macedonian Front. He was commissioned as a 2nd Lieutenant in the Royal Garrison Artillery in 1917.
Parry – Songs of Farewell The Songs of Farewell were composed and first performed during WWI. “During the war he watched a life’s work of progress and education being wiped away as the male population, particularly the new fertile generation of composing talent [of the Royal College of music], dwindled.” (Oxford Dictionary of National Biography).
J S Bach – O Jesu Christ, meins Lebens Licht (BWV118) Written in the 1730s this accompanied motet was sung at the grave-side ceremony for Count Friedrich von Flemming on October 11, 1740.
Fauré – Requiem To be sung in commemoration of all who gave their lives during the Great War.
Kiev chant – Kontakion and Ikos for the departed A Russian Orthodox hymn for the departed which concludes with a declaration of confidence in the resurrection and the life hereafter.
