Exhibition: Service & Sacrifice – Newton Abbot Town & GWR Museum
2 April 2014 - 31 October 2014
The Museum Service & Sacrifice WWI exhibition opened on the 2nd April 2014 and concentrates on how the War effected the men and women of Newton Abbot. The panels tell the stories of the individuals, Soldiers, Sailors, Nurses etc. All the men listed on the Town’s First World War memorial have already been researched, we also needed stories about the survivors and that is where our research began.
The museum ran a WWI open day in September 2013 encouraging the local community to come forward with their stories/objects. Following a good response we have been able to display many interesting artefacts that the museum collection did not have, including a Vickers machine gun.
Many of the interpretative panels have been based on letters from the men and their WWI Diaries, the families allowing us to copy the information.
The museum is at present working on updating their website incorporating a new page on the WWI sharing yet more stories and images that they are not able to tell in the space available. Visit the site to learn more at www.museum-newtonabbot.co.uk
Museum opening hours: Monday – Thursday 10am – 4pm, Friday 10am – 12 noon, Saturday 2pm – 4pm
