Exhibition – John Ludgate: Art and the First World War
11 August 2014 - 30 September 2014
My father, John Henry Francis Ludgate who was a soldier in the 1st World War and was severely wounded in the horrific battle of the Somme in 1916.
An exhibition in my gallery, Ludgate Fine Art in Chagford on Dartmoor will tell how his experiences in the war affected his intended career as an Art Teacher and how, despite his terrible injury, he managed to create some beautiful fine etchings and go on to help many other disabled veterans of both World Wars.
There will be on display a collection of memorabilia from the war including his uniform together with a wonderful collection of some of his Drypoint etchings, some of which will be for sale and I intend donating a percentage of any sales to an ex soldiers charity.
Although my father was not from Devon he retired here and lived many happy years in Sidmouth.
